A Decade of Minimalism | Sebastian Hooft

It was in 2014 that I first encountered minimalism, thanks to an article in San Francisco Magazine. This encounter marked the beginning of a decade-long journey that changed my approach to material possessions and provided deep insights into personal relationships and inner needs.

The journey began with a focus on physical detachment. I reduced my possessions, simplified my wardrobe, and reconsidered my purchases. These steps were an attempt to uncover my life's essence, look beyond the material, and find more meaning in the everyday.

Unexpected lessons

One of the most instructive moments on this path was my decision to replace the conventional sofas in my home with tatami mats. This was a physical manifestation of my pursuit of minimalism, but it also brought an unexpected lesson. It turned out that this change conflicted with the needs of my now ex-partner, who valued the comfort of traditional sofas. This was a crucial moment of self-reflection and adjustment, teaching me that respecting the needs and comfort of others is just as important as following your path.

Embracing simplicity on the road: My journey towards minimalism, one smaller car at a time.

Another example of how my journey into minimalism unfolded was my relationship with cars. Despite the ongoing temptation of sports cars, I opted for a more economical vehicle. This choice illustrates how minimalism extends beyond physical possessions to our desires and priorities. It was an exercise in self-control and in recognizing the worries that come with valuable possessions.

Discovering feelings and needs

Implementing the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) method in 2017 became a turning point in my journey. NVC enabled me to understand the complexity of human relationships and the interdependence of our needs. This was evident in the dilemma with my limited wardrobe of four black T-shirts. Faced with a practical problem – the weekly laundry routine of my current partner – I applied NVC to find a solution that respected my minimalist values without disturbing the household harmony. I bought four extra shirts, a simple but effective solution that balanced my principles and practical reality.

Contrasts: From my journey in minimalism to a moment in the lap of luxury, I understand the full spectrum of life's experiences.

An awe-inspiring experience was reorganizing a concierge company for the ultra-rich. This year, they brought me into direct contact with the extreme expressions of material abundance and the often accompanying dissatisfaction. This experience deepened my understanding of the emptiness that material excess can bring and confirmed my belief in the power of a simpler, more satisfying life.

Reflecting on this journey, I realize minimalism can take many forms, and everyone can find their unique path within this philosophy. It's not just about reducing physical possessions but also about finding a balance between personal needs and those of others, controlling desires, and pursuing a life in line with your values.

Questions to ask

Almost a decade later, my journey into minimalism is a continuous process of self-discovery and growth. It continually invites reflection on what is truly important and how small, thoughtful steps can lead to a simpler yet richer life. What aspects of your life would you like to simplify? How can you start making conscious choices? A journey into minimalism can begin with reconsidering what is essential in your life.
